On Thursday, April 19th, 2018, students from all four Rockingham County High Schools took part in an interactive and student led field trip to Farmville Virginia. This field trip was the culmination of an Civil Rights Independent Study offered through Rockingham known as "The Farmville Experience". During this trip, students took part in telling the story of how a small town in Virginia, led by a sixteen year old African American girl named Barbara Johns, fought relentlessly for their Civil Rights. This case later became a part the largest of five cases, which combined to make the famous Supreme Court Case of Brown vs. Board of Education.
Three groups from Spotswood High School comprised of 11 total students did a phenomenal job of representing their school community with professionalism and poise. By helping to tell this often overlooked story, students play a key role in the ongoing narrative of Civil Rights in our country. Additionally, on Monday, April 23rd, our state of Virginia will celebrate its first ever Barbara Johns Day. Below you will see pictures of our Spotswood groups as they gave their presentations on the different facets of this story."
On Monday March 5th, students from SHS's Educators Rising Club and the Spanish Honor Society joined the Rockingham County Education Association to celebrate Dr. Seuss's birthday with the Read Across America event! Thanks to everyone, big and little, who came out to help us celebrate.
